The idea to create a seahorse came directly from the shapes of the various automobile parts used in the piece. Then segmented, biomechanical body parts were imagined and realized in fabricated / carved steel.

This piece started with welding a face onto a piston, and in doing so the cyclops/ surfclops pun name came to mind. The character is wearing an early 1900’s men’s bathing suit and hanging ten on a custom longboard.
All the elements of the sculpture are fabricated, forged and carved directly in the metal. It is not a casting.

This sculpture was commissioned by the Baltimore Ravens organization as a gift for David Modell. I based it on the side view bird head logo, envisioning what the rest of the body would look like. The work incorporates 1/8”, 1/4”, and 1/2” steel plate. The main base curve is 1” x 2” solid bar and the legs and feet are various sizes of round bar. The roman numerals commemorate the year of the superbowl win and the team logo is incorporated in the base, both were hand cut from 1/8” steel with a jewelers saw.

Each fish is approximately 6’ long. Fiberglass, 12 and 16 gauge mild steel sheet, various diameters steel round bar, stainless steel chainmail, silicon bronze, glass.
The first fish, Sir Gallishad, was done as part of the “Fish Out of Water” exhibit here in Baltimore. Artists are given a fiberglass fish blank and a small stipend to produce a fish for an auction to benefit charity. I was contacted by the Walters Art Museum to create a fish that would reflect their armor collection. I cut the fins off the original then clad it in steel, the only visible part of the original is the eye. The fish is on display in the museum.
The swordfish was done for a private residence, no fiberglass core. Built in much the same way as the other fish, although this one has hand cast glass eyeballs which are backlit with led’s. There is a small toggle switch under the belly to operate the lights and the jaw removes with one fastener in the roof of its mouth to access the battery pack.
